Children’s eyecare initiative
Polly Dulley is chair of this national group, run by the Optical Confederation. The aim of the group is to improve eyecare for ALL children. This means trying to get the message across to both parents and teachers that eyecare is vital for all children. In the UK, just 53% of children have ever had any kind of eye examination, and this means that one in five children have an undetected vision problem.
Many parents assume that children’ss eyes are still checked at school, but this is simply not the case, in many parts of the UK. They also think that a child will complain if they have a vision problem, but many children don’st realise they have a problem, because they have no idea of what is normal.
So far, Polly has written a letter to the head teachers of 23,000 schools in the UK, asking for help from teachers in encouraging parents to get their children’ss eyes checked, and offering help and resources to improve understanding and knowledge about eyes and eyecare.
Many children who come to Aves already have been used in filming and for interviews in both local and national newspapers, telling their own story of why regular eyecare is so important and how it has changed their lives.
If your children haven’st had an eye examination, book them in today. It’ss free and it might make a huge difference to your child’ss development. Children who can’st see clearly find it more difficult to learn and play!
Prescription Sunglasses
Protecting our eyes from the sun’ss harmful rays is vital. Eye conditions such as cataract and macular degeneration are both more likely in people who don’st protect their eyes from the sun. Aves stock a wide range of both non-prescription and prescription sunglasses. A complete pair of prescription sunglasses costs as little as £99, so do pop in and have a look. Be ready for the sunshine!

Recent years have seen great improvements in contact lens design. With the development of new contact lens materials and designs we are improving the fit and comfort of contact lenses all the time. With the advent of daily disposable, astigmatic and multifocal contact lenses, there is now a lens to suit almost every wearer whether it is disposable, re-usable or a specially designed bespoke lens.
Thinking of starting to wear contact lenses?
The first step is to find out about the type of lens that may be suitable for you. This depends on many factors including:
- Your prescription
- How often you want to wear your lenses
- Your occupation and work environment
- Your tear film and eye sensitivity
First of all we’ll do a full eye examination to find your prescription and to check that your eyes are healthy, followed by a specific contact lens fitting. During the fitting, you will wear diagnostic contact lenses to check your suitability for contact lens wear. Further checks of your eyes and tear film help to assess the most suitable type of lens for your personal needs.
At our practice you are not committed to purchase lenses at your initial visit - if you decide lenses are not for you, you will simply pay for your eye examination and the initial fitting fee. However, if you get on well at the initial fitting, we will teach you how to handle and care for the lenses, so that you can take some home to try. After a follow up appointment a few days later, we can then go ahead and order lenses.
How much will my lenses cost?
The cost of your lenses depends on which type fits your lifestyle. Whether you want to wear your lenses every day or just for sports, we have the lens for you
As independent practitioners, we can source our lenses from all manufacturers and our prices are comparable with the supermarkets and internet suppliers. You choose whether you want to buy lenses only or as part of our Care Plan with full professional cover, a monthly direct debit payment.
Most patients choose our Care Plan with full professional cover because it spreads the cost, includes all your contact lens check-ups, retinal photography and free replacement lenses if lost or damaged. You also get great discounts on spectacles and sunglasses.
Daily Disposables cost from around £1 per day including all your contact lens care. Monthly disposables start from 55p per day including all contact lens check ups, solutions and regular lens supply.
Please call or email us with your details and we can quote you for lenses only or supply with full professional cover.
What’s new in Contact Lenses
As independent optometrists, Aves are able to fit any brand of contact lens. This is great for you, because it means that we can ensure that you get the best possible contact lens to suit you.
Aves Optometrists has been awarded the Acuvue Contact Lens Centre of Excellence, as recognition of our efforts to provide the best possible standards in our contact lens care.
Johnson and Johnson have recently launched a daily disposable contact lens made from a brand new material. The Acuvue TruEye lens allows more oxygen to the eye than any other daily disposable contact lens. This allows your eyes to breath, as if you’re not wearing contact lenses at all. It also provides the best UV protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Its unique Hydraclear technology makes the lens exceptionally comfortable and moist, as if you’re not wearing any lenses at all. Enjoy a fresh, new, clean lens everyday, it’s the most hygienic way to wear contact lenses.
Are you having trouble reading things close up? Don’t worry, it happens to all of us. The condition is called presbyopia which affects everyone, usually starting in our 40’s. Now you can enjoy clear vision at all distances as well as great comfort with the new Air Optix Aqua Multifocal contact lenses. These are monthly disposable lenses, with Precision Transition lens design to optimise near and intermediate vision without compromising your distance vision. The Air Optix Aqua lens material provides plenty of oxygen and moisture to help ensure your eyes stay healthy and comfortable all day long.
Ortho K offers a new dawn for vision correction, clear, comfortable vision without the need to wear contact lenses at all during the day.
